Kathleen and Edward Ludwig Empower Living Learning Communities at Douglass

Donors: Kathleen DC’75 and Edward Ludwig

Recipient: The Kathleen W. Ludwig Global Village Living Learning Center at Douglass Residential College

Gift: $1 million

What it supports: A new 19,000-square-foot modern residential facility for the Global Village that includes dorm rooms, classrooms, and assembly and lounge spaces for lectures and conferences.

Why it matters: The Kathleen W. Ludwig Global Village Living Learning Center is a community in which Douglass women who are interested in global citizenship and cross-cultural exchange can live together and take part in service and international travel projects that provide powerful hands-on learning experiences.

The Global Village works to address gender disparities and to increase leadership roles for women everywhere. It offers students opportunities to live in theme-based houses such as public health, Africana studies, Spanish, and human rights, where they can develop language skills, intercultural appreciation, global awareness, and a sense of community with other residents.

The new facility, which opened in September 2016, will enable students to connect, in real time, with partners around the globe; hold meetings, workshops, and programs on timely, relevant issues; and interact with others in an informal, spontaneous manner.
